On July 13, 2023, The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. held a Awards and Leadership Workshop in Cordele, Georgia. The workshop was held at the Economic Development facility of South Georgia Technical College, of the Cordele Campus. The seminar was attended by participants from various Garden Clubs in the Camellia and Magnolia District which serve  primarily counties of South Georgia.

The resource speakers for The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. morning Leadership workshop was Mrs. Lisa Hall, President of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. (GCG) who focused on the leadership and changes within the various levels of The Garden Club of Georgia and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Additionally, she presented the new 2023-2024 President’s Report for the clubs. The GCG Second Vice-President, Bess Hartley focused on Parliamentary information for the clubs. The Third Vice President, Marilyn McDonnell provided information directed at grants to help fund club projects and the fourth Vice-President, Nilsa Summey focused on membership. Gale Thomas, Recording Secretary of GCG and Education Chairman, spoke on Educational workshops offered by The National Garden Club, Inc. and GCG.

The Leadership team entertained as well as gave helpful information about getting started or continuing with garden club operations and working with The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc and its agencies or Chairmen to assist them. The “Roadmap to A Successful” garden club aids the individual clubs to understand what organizations they are members of and how to quickly gain the information they need to function successfully. The delightful chant of recruit -retain-revitalize was utilized by Nilsa Summey, Fourth Vice President in charge of the GCG membership, and will be remembered as to how to recruit and retain  memberships.

The afternoon was for the Awards Workshop. Presenter Diana Malone, GCG State Chairman of Awards concentrated on Awards applications, new rules, and the best possible presentation of the application. Workbooks were supplied and reviewed by all participants. Ms. Malone had a professional sidekick and lifelong friend, Martha Cobb, Vice-Chairman of Awards, to entertain and provide outstanding memorable awards questions and information for the attendees. Laughter abounded as Martha played her part well for questions and answers about the various awards Clubs should apply to. Ms. Malone brought everyone up to date on the 2023 application rules and where to find information.

“GCG” and the Districts looks forward to helping Garden Clubbers learn more about how they can help the earth through Garden Clubs which will serve us all. GCG’s focus is Beautification, Conservation, and Education. By Kay Hagler, Magnolia District.
